The Perfect Weekend in Condado, Puerto Rico: My Favorite Places to Eat, Explore & Relax
Whenever friends or family tell me they're planning a trip to Puerto Rico, one of the first questions they ask is, "Where should I stay?"
My answer is almost always the same: Condado.
After moving to Puerto Rico, Condado quickly became one of my favorite neighborhoods on the island. I love that you can spend an entire weekend here without renting a car. You can start your morning with a great cup of coffee, walk to the beach, spend the afternoon exploring and end the night with an incredible dinner, all without worrying about transportation.
If it's your first time visiting Puerto Rico, I honestly think Condado offers the perfect introduction to the island. You get beautiful beaches, fantastic restaurants, easy access to some of San Juan's most iconic attractions, and a neighborhood that's easy to navigate whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, or with a group of friends.
Why I Love Staying in Condado
One of my favorite things about Condado is that it gives you options.
If you want a relaxing vacation, you can spend your days walking along Ashford Avenue, grabbing coffee from one of the neighborhood's many cafés, reading on the beach, and enjoying long dinners by the water.
If you're someone who likes to stay busy, you're only minutes from Old San Juan, Escambrón Beach, Distrito T-Mobile, and plenty of tours that can take you to places like El Yunque or Ron del Barrilito.
It strikes a balance that I think a lot of travelers are looking for. You can have an adventurous day without ever feeling rushed.
One thing I'll mention is that Condado is definitely one of the more touristy neighborhoods in Puerto Rico, and that's actually part of why I enjoy it. Coming from Washington, DC, I appreciate having a balance of city life, beautiful beaches, and island culture all in one place. I can walk to great restaurants, grab an amazing cup of coffee, spend the afternoon at the beach, and still have easy access to places like Old San Juan or the airport.
If your ideal Puerto Rico trip looks more like secluded beaches, mountain towns, rainforest cabins, or hidden local gems, Condado may not be the right fit for you. I'll be sharing guides for those types of experiences too. But if you're planning a quick getaway and want to stay somewhere central, walkable, and filled with great hotels, restaurants, and amenities you're already accustomed to, I think Condado is one of the best places to base yourself.
Come Hungry
One thing you definitely won't run out of is good food.
Some of my favorite restaurants in Puerto Rico are within walking distance of each other in Condado. Whether you're craving Puerto Rican flavors, Italian, Mediterranean, an amazing steak dinner, or simply looking for a really good cup of coffee, you'll find it here.
I've also included a few of my favorite dessert spots because no trip to Condado feels complete without ending the evening with gelato or stopping for a coffee before your morning walk.
Don't Skip These Experiences
While Condado itself has plenty to keep you busy, I always encourage visitors to venture just a little beyond the neighborhood.
Spend an afternoon wandering the colorful streets of Old San Juan. Go snorkeling at Escambrón Beach. Take a day trip to El Yunque National Forest. If you want to experience Puerto Rican culture beyond the city, dedicate a day to going chinchorreando.
Those experiences are what turn a great vacation into one you'll remember long after you've gone home.
