The Ultimate 12-Day Cruise from India to Singapore: Complete Itinerary & Travel Guide

Imagine waking up in a different country every few days without ever having to repack your suitcase. That's exactly what made this cruise such an unforgettable experience.

What made it even more special was that I experienced it completely solo. Traveling alone on a cruise gave me the freedom to explore each destination at my own pace, choose the excursions that genuinely interested me, and fully immerse myself in each new place. If you've ever been curious about taking a cruise by yourself, I hope this post shows that it's not only possible but one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience multiple countries while still enjoying the comfort, safety, and community that cruising provides.

This 12-day sailing from Mumbai, India, to Singapore took me through India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, offering an incredible mix of history, culture, wildlife, beaches, and modern cities. It was the perfect way to experience several destinations in one trip without the hassle of constantly packing, unpacking, or coordinating flights between countries.

One of my favorite surprises was visiting places I probably wouldn't have planned a standalone trip to. Before booking this cruise, Sri Lanka and Malaysia weren't high on my travel bucket list. Looking back, they became two of my favorite countries on the itinerary and reminded me that sometimes the destinations you know the least about end up making the biggest impression.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing detailed guides for each destination, including my favorite experiences, shore excursions, travel tips, and recommendations. Think of this post as your overview of the itinerary—and hopefully the inspiration for planning your own adventure.

Cruise Overview

Embarkation :Mumbai, India

Disembarkation: Singapore

Duration: 12 Days (4 Sea Days)

Countries Visited: India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore

One of the things I appreciated most about this itinerary was its pace. The sea days were perfectly spaced throughout the cruise, giving me time to relax, enjoy the ship, and recharge before arriving somewhere completely new. It struck a great balance between adventure and downtime, making the experience feel much less rushed than trying to visit each destination independently.

About the Cruise & Ship

This itinerary was aboard the Celebrity Millennium, one of Celebrity Cruises' Millennium-class ships. While it isn't one of the cruise line's newest vessels, I found it to be well-maintained, comfortable, and a great fit for an itinerary that focuses on the destinations as much as the onboard experience.

Because this cruise included several port-intensive days, the ship became the perfect place to recharge. After long days exploring temples, cities, beaches, and national parks, it was nice returning to a comfortable cabin, enjoying dinner, and relaxing before the next adventure.

As someone traveling solo, I also appreciated how easy it was to navigate the ship and how comfortable I felt throughout the voyage. Whether I wanted a quiet place to read with an ocean view, enjoy a meal at my own pace, or strike up a conversation with fellow travelers, I never felt out of place. Cruising remains one of my favorite ways to travel solo because it offers the perfect balance of independence and community.

What I Loved About the Ship

  • Comfortable and well-designed public spaces that never felt overcrowded.

  • Plenty of quiet places to relax between excursions.

  • Excellent service from the crew throughout the sailing.

  • A good variety of dining options - the food really did not disappoint

  • A relaxed atmosphere that complemented this destination-focused itinerary.

Is This Cruise Right for You?

I think this itinerary is an excellent choice if you:

  • Want to experience several Asian countries in one trip.

  • Prefer cultural experiences over beach-only vacations.

  • Enjoy a mix of history, wildlife, city exploration, and scenic landscapes.

  • Like having a balance of busy port days and relaxing sea days.

destination highlights

Mumbai, India 🇮🇳

I arrived a day before embarkation to adjust to the time difference, recover from jet lag, and explore Mumbai before boarding the ship.

This wasn't my first trip to India. Years ago, I visited the Golden Triangle—Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur—which is more than 20 hours from Mumbai. Let's just say that trip included a memorable case of Delhi Belly, so I was admittedly a little nervous about returning. Thankfully, Mumbai completely changed my perspective. Its vibrant energy, coastal setting, and modern-meets-historic atmosphere made it the perfect place to begin this journey.

Goa, India 🇮🇳

Our first port introduced us to Goa's laid-back beach culture, Portuguese influence, and scenic coastline. Although I already live on an island surrounded by beautiful Caribbean beaches, I loved experiencing a completely different style of coastal destination. Goa's beaches have their own personality, making it a refreshing contrast to the turquoise waters I'm used to back home.

Colombo, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

Colombo was my introduction to Sri Lanka, and it immediately exceeded my expectations. The city blends colonial architecture, bustling streets, historic landmarks, and modern development in a way that feels uniquely its own.

Exploring the City of Colombo allowed me to experience neighborhoods I may have otherwise overlooked, but my favorite stop was definitely the Lotus Tower. The panoramic views from the observation deck and lunch at the revolving restaurant gave me an entirely new appreciation for the city.

Hambantota, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

Without question, one of the biggest highlights of the entire cruise was visiting Yala National Park for a safari.

Seeing elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, monkeys, peacocks, and countless other animals roaming freely in their natural habitat was an experience I'll never forget. A safari wasn't something I ever imagined doing on a cruise vacation, but it ended up being one of my favorite travel experiences ever.

If you're considering this itinerary, this excursion alone makes the cruise worth it.

Phuket, Thailand 🇹🇭

We spent two days in Phuket, giving us more time than most cruise itineraries allow. Phuket delivered exactly what many people imagine when they think of Thailand: colorful temples, dramatic viewpoints, incredible food, and beautiful beaches.

While I wish I'd had more time to explore other parts of Thailand, Phuket certainly didn't disappoint. Ending the day at Promthep Cape while watching the sunset over the Andaman Sea was one of my favorite moments of the trip.

Penang, Malaysia 🇲🇾

Between its rich multicultural history, incredible temples, and panoramic views from Penang Hill, there was so much to love. The blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures gives Penang a unique character unlike anywhere else I visited.

Visiting during Chinese New Year made the experience even more special. The festive decorations, celebrations, and vibrant atmosphere added another layer to an already memorable destination.

My favorite stop on the tour was Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the most beautiful temples I've visited.

Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia 🇲🇾

Kuala Lumpur definitely fought for a spot at the top of my favorite places on this trip.

After several days filled with historic sites, temples, beaches, and wildlife, arriving in one of Southeast Asia's most modern cities was a fun change of pace. Between the impressive skyline, incredible shopping, diverse food scene, and vibrant energy, I easily could have spent several more days here.

The city is full of many attractions and breathtaking views and I suggest taking a tour so you can see them all. If I had to choose one highlight, it would be visiting Menara KL Tower for its incredible panoramic views of the city.

Singapore 🇸🇬

The cruise concluded in Singapore, where I extended my trip with a few extra nights.

It couldn't have been a better finale. Singapore instantly became one of my favorite destinations I've ever visited. I loved the combination of lush greenery, futuristic architecture, luxury, and how effortlessly easy it was to explore the city. I ended up getting on the Hop On Hop Off Big Bus Tours so I could see everything I wanted to see without worrying about how to get to each spot.

Although it's difficult to pick just one favorite experience, Gardens by the Bay and the evening light show are memories I'll never forget.

What I Loved About This trip

There were so many things that made this itinerary special, but these stood out the most:

  • Visiting five countries without constantly packing and unpacking.

  • Experiencing an incredible mix of cities, beaches, wildlife, temples, and modern skylines.

  • Discovering destinations that I probably wouldn't have visited otherwise.

  • Having enough sea days to truly relax instead of feeling rushed.

  • Enjoying organized shore excursions while still having opportunities to explore independently.

  • Feeling completely comfortable traveling solo throughout the journey.

Every port offered something completely different, making the itinerary feel incredibly diverse from beginning to end.

Things to Know Before Booking

If you're considering this itinerary, here are a few tips I'd recommend:

  • Arrive in Mumbai at least one day before embarkation to account for possible flight delays and jet lag.

  • Research visa requirements well in advance, as they vary depending on your nationality.

  • Expect hot and humid weather throughout much of the itinerary.

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes because you'll be doing a lot of exploring.

  • Book popular shore excursions early, especially safaris and full-day tours.

  • Download offline maps before arriving in each destination.

  • Carry a small amount of local currency for each port, especially if you’re doing the safari tour in Hambantota.

Recommended Tours

These are the tours I personally experienced (or would confidently recommend) to anyone following this itinerary.

Final Thoughts

This cruise reminded me exactly why I love traveling.

Every port introduced me to a different culture, different cuisine, different landscapes, and a completely different perspective. From the energy of Mumbai to spotting elephants on safari in Sri Lanka, wandering through temples in Thailand, experiencing the multicultural charm of Malaysia, and ending in futuristic Singapore, no two destinations felt alike.

What surprised me most wasn't just how much I saw, it was how much I loved places I hadn't originally planned to visit. Sri Lanka and Malaysia became some of the biggest highlights of the trip, proving that the destinations you know the least about often become the ones you remember most.

If you're looking for an itinerary that combines adventure, culture, wildlife, history, incredible food, and plenty of opportunities to relax, I can't recommend this cruise enough.
